Chapter
Thirty-Three
Knock, donât ring the bell,â she told him. âHermanâs trying to sleep.â Sarah hung up the phone and went to stand by the door. She waited until she heard the slight rap and then opened up.
Adin was standing there.
âCome on in.â
âYouâre sure itâs a good time? I mean if youâre busy . . .â
âNo, not at all. Herman is resting.â
All of a sudden the dog started to bark.
âDamn it! Or at least he was,â said Sarah.
âWho is it?â Hermanâs deep voice bellowed from somewhere down the hall.
âItâs OK, Herman. Itâs just a friend.â
Bugsy started to bark again.
âIâm gonna kill that dog,â she said.
âWhy donât you bring him out?â said Adin.
âAre you sure? Heâs not terribly friendly around men. He tolerates Herman only because heâs in bed. He drove the visiting nurse, this young guy, right up against the wall in Hermanâs room this morning. I had to go pull him off. Thatâs why heâs locked up.â
âGo let him out,â said Hirst.
âIâll put him on a leash if you want to meet him.â Sarah headed down the hall. A few seconds later she came back with the Doberman on a heavy leash. There was a choke chain that looped around Bugsyâs neck. It tightened every time he pulled. Even with this the dog dragged her from the hallway out into the living room.
âPut water wings on him and you could ski behind him,â said Adin. âHeâs beautiful.â
âHe thinks so,â said Sarah.
âLet him go.â
âI donât dare.â
âSooner or later weâre gonna have to meet,â said Adin.
âAre you sure?â
âYes.â Adin got down on one knee. âYou can mop up the blood if Iâm wrong, but I donât think heâs going to attack me.â
âItâs your funeral,â said Sarah. Gently she released the strain on the leash.
âGo ahead and take it off,â said Adin.
âNo. No. You donât know him. I need to be able to haul him in if I have to.â The minute she let go of the leash, Bugsy stopped.
He looked at Adin, one knee down on the floor ten feet away. The dog and the man were at eye level.
âCome on.â Adin coaxed him. âThe secret is no sudden moves. Come on.â He allowed his voice to rise just a little. With the rest of his body perfectly still, he slowly raised his right arm, keeping his hand limp, palm down, with his fingers curved a little and open.
Bugsy moved slowly across the floor, sniffing the air as he went. A step at a time he slowly glided across the carpet until he was no more than three feet from Hirst. The dog moved cautiously to his right as if circling.
Adin didnât move his hand. He left it where it was.
Bugsy came in from the side and slowly sniffed the back of his hand.
âThatâs a good boy.â He allowed the dog to sniff as long as he wanted.
Slowly the dog moved in closer to Adinâs body. He picked up the scent off his chest and his face. By the time dog and man
